In the previous chapter, we were discussing how to teach the commandments to the Israelites when Christ comes back.
Let’s continue:
COMMANDMENT NO. 4
Exod 20:8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
In the first place, the Sabbath is holy because God “hallowed” it, meaning he set it aside for holy use, see verse 11.
11 For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it (made it holy).
Gene 2:2 (KJV) And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and SANCTIFIED it (separated it for holy use): because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
The word ‘hallowed’, Heb qadash, item 06942 in Strong’s means sanctify, dedicate, consecrate, be separate. The Sabbath is a separate day and not the same as the first six days.
Sabbath command given BEFORE the Ten Commandments:
Exod 16:11 (KJV) And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying, 12 I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even you shall eat flesh, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I [am] the LORD your God.
Note that God was still unknown to the Israelites, hence he was introducing himself.
13 And it came to pass, that at even the quails came up, and covered the camp: and in the morning the dew lay round about the host. 14 And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness [there lay] a small round thing, [as] small as the hoar frost on the ground. 15 And when the children of Israel saw [it], they said one to another, It [is] MANNA: for they wist (knew) not what it [was]. And Moses said unto them, This [is] the bread which the LORD has given you to eat. {It is…: or, What is this? or, It is a portion} 16 This [is] the thing which the LORD had commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer (approx. 2 quarts) for every man, [according to] the number of your persons; take you every man for [them] which [are] in his tents.
…19 And Moses said, Let no man leave of it till the morning. 20 Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.
…22 And it came to pass, [that] on the SIXTH DAY they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one [man]: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.
23 And he (Moses) said unto them, This [is that] which the LORD had said, Tomorrow [is] the rest of the holy Sabbath unto the LORD: bake [that] which you will bake [today], and seethe that you will seethe; and that which remains over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.
…25 And (in the morning) Moses said, Eat that (which were laid up) today; for today [is] a Sabbath unto the LORD: today you shall not find it in the field. 26 Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day, [which is] the Sabbath, in it there shall be none.
27 And it came to pass, [that] there went out [some] of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.
28 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse you to keep my commandments and my laws? 29 See, for that the LORD has given you the Sabbath, therefore he gives you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide you every man in his place, LET NO MAN GO OUT OF HIS PLACE ON THE SEVENTH DAY.
30 So the people RESTED on the seventh day.
The Sabbath is hallowed, and we are commanded to keep it that way.
Here are ways to keep the Sabbath holy:
- Resting is only one way of keeping it holy:
Gene 2:2 (KJV) And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he RESTED on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
- Work animals are also to be given rest:
Exod 20:12 Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest: that your OX and your ASS may REST, and the son of your handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.
- Saving a life on the Sabbath is lawful:
Mark 3:1 (KJV) And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand. 2 And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day; that they might accuse him. 3 And he said unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth. {Stand forth: Gr. Arise, stand forth in the midst} 4 And he said unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath days, or to do evil? to SAVE LIFE, or to kill? But they held their peace. 5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he said unto the man, Stretch forth your hand. And he stretched [it] out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
- Pulling an animal from a ditch where it had fallen is lawful on the Sabbath day
Luke 14:1 (KJV) And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath day, that they watched him. 2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. 3 And Jesus answering spoke unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath day? 4 And they held their peace. And he took [him], and healed him, and let him go; 5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull it out on the Sabbath day? 6 And they could not answer him again to these things.
- Providing water to animals on the Sabbath day is allowed:
Luke 13:11 (KJV) And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up [herself]. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he called [her to him], and said unto her, Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity. 13 And he laid [his] hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath day, and said unto the people, (this was probably a teaching of Judaism) There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.
15 The Lord then answered him, and said, [You] hypocrite, does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or [his] ass from the stall, and lead [him] away to watering?
Researchers cannot find Christ’s reference on this statement in the Law of Moses. Apparently this was a practice of the Jews which Christ had found lawful.
Let Christ continue:
Luke 13:16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?
17 And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.
Commandment No. 4 continued:
Exod 20:9 Six days shall you LABOR, and do all your WORK:
10 But the seventh day [is] the Sabbath of the LORD your God: [in it] you shall not do any WORK, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger that [is] within your gates:
11 For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.
The word WORK has different meanings.
- In verse 9, Heb. MELAKA, item 4399 in Strong’s, WORK means deputyship but not servile (servile means befitting a slave or servant), EMPLOYMENT. Melaka therefore means the worker is either an employer who deputizes others, or a SALARIED EMPLOYEE. This type of work is not allowed.
- The word WORK in verse 10, Heb. MA’ASEH, item 4639 in Strong’s, means occupation. This means the worker is SELF-EMPLOYED. This type of work is also not allowed.
Note that in both cases of melaka and ma’aseh, the worker is a free man.
- On the other hand, the word LABOR in verse 9, Heb. Abad, item 5647 in Strong’s means enslave, bond-service, compel. It means the worker is either a master or a slave. The word labor therefore refers to servile work and the slave is not free. This type of work is also not allowed. Servants who escaped from their master, most likely due to cruelty, are not condemned by God:
Deut 23:15 (KJV) You shall not deliver unto his master the servant which is escaped from his master unto you: 16 He shall dwell with you, [even] among you, in that place which he shall choose in one of your gates, where it likes him best: you shall not oppress him. {likes…: Heb. is good for him}
Clearly, the fourth commandment prescribes that the Sabbath is a day of rest from our own occupations (for the self-employed), employment (for both employer and employee), and servile work (for both master and slave).
Sabbath-keeping therefore could not be dispensed with even by Christ. It is prescribed by law and therefore its observance is obligatory.
Matt 5:17 (KJV, Christ speaking) Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill (i.e., keep the law).
- Human endeavors and worldly pursuits, AND humanitarian activities are prohibited:
Isai 58:13 (KJV) If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, [(if you turn away your foot) from] doing your pleasure on MY HOLY DAY; and (instead) call the Sabbath a delight, the holy (day) of the LORD, honorable; and shall honor him (by obeying his command), not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor SPEAKING [YOUR OWN] WORDS:
14 Then (in keeping the Sabbath properly) shall you delight yourself in the LORD; and I WILL CAUSE YOU TO RIDE UPON THE HIGH PLACES OF THE EARTH, and FEED you with the heritage of Jacob your father: for the mouth of the LORD had spoken [it].
- Delighting ourselves in the LORD means we only do God’s work on the Sabbath. MAN’S WORK is prohibited in order to give way to GOD’S WORK (of creating man after his own likeness, Gene 1:26).
Matt 12:1 (KJV) At that time Jesus went on the Sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungered, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw [it], they said unto him, Behold, your disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the Sabbath day. 3 But he said unto them, Have you not read what David did, when he was an hungered, and they that were with him; 4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the showbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have you not read in the law, how that on the Sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath (by killing animals), and are blameless? (because they were doing GOD’S WORK!)
Here is what the priests must do (which are God’s work) on the Sabbath day:
Numb 28:9 (KJV) And on the Sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth deals of flour [for] a meat offering, mingled with oil, and the drink offering thereof: 10 [This is] the burnt offering of every Sabbath, BESIDE (in addition to) the continual (i.e., daily) burnt offering, and its drink offering.
Matt 12:6 But I say unto you, That in this place is [one] greater than the temple. 7 But if you had known what [this] means, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of man (Jesus Christ)is Lord even of the Sabbath day (he was the one who prescribed what may and may not be done).
- Christ’s conclusion.
Mark 2:27 (KJV) And (Christ) said…The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath…
Comments: The Sabbath was made for man for what reason? From the above indications, the Sabbath was made for man TO KEEP! Man is to remember to keep it holy as God made it. It was made for man; therefore we need to keep it holy WHILE WE ARE STILL HUMAN.
The Worldwide Church of God under Mr. Joseph W. Tkach, Sr. instituted some changes on the Sabbath observance which we have discussed separately under a the title “True or False – Christ did humanitarian work on the Sabbath” posted on this website.
For a sneak-peek, Christ described his work to the disciples of John the Baptist as follows:
Luke 7:19 (KJV) And John (the Baptist) calling [unto him] two of his disciples sent [them] to Jesus, saying, Are you he that should come? or look we for another? …21 And in that same hour Jesus cured many of [their] infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many [that were] blind he gave sight (which would all appear to be humanitarian work, except that they were not!).
22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John (the Baptist) what things you have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor (his target audience) THE GOSPEL IS PREACHED.
Mark 1:14 (KJV) Now after that John (the Baptist) was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, (that was Jesus’ work!)
John 18:20 (KJV) Jesus answered (the High Priest who was interrogating him), I spoke openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort (especially on Sabbath days); and in secret have I said nothing.
Matt 9:35 (KJV) And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues (on Sabbath days), and PREACHING THE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people (to show the power of God who will reign in the Kingdom that he was preaching to the people!)
IN CONCLUSION, healing the sick was PART OF CHRIST’S WORK of preaching the gospel of the coming Kingdom of God. And he did it on Sabbath days obviously because that was the time the Jews were gathered together in the Temple and in synagogues. What he did was God’s work, not humanitarian work, on Sabbath days! Under Commandment No. 4, all worldly pursuits are prohibited on Sabbath days, obviously to give way to God’s work of creating man after his own likeness! ■
